Audi R8 Could Make A Comeback With Lamborghini’s Help

The Audi R8 is coming back? And it won’t be an electric car? That’s the latest report about the future of Audi’s supercar badge. The same report says that it will be twinned with a new Lamborghini and that engineering is well underway. It’s not even that far away, with the possibility that the car could be on the road as soon as late 2027. According to the latest from Autocar, Audi boss Gernot Döllner is onboard and backing the plan for the new R8.

Support from the top is crucial for a low-volume and expensive model like this. Döllner is likely hoping to shake things up at Audi, which has – and perhaps this isn’t a coincidence – seen its sales suffer since the end of production of the last-generation R8.
The report says the new R8 will be twinned with the Lamborghini Temerario. It’s not surprising to see this since the last R8 shared its platform with the Lamborghini Huracan. The V10 engines were very similar as well.
R8 Will Share Lamborghini Architecture, Power

This time around, the 2028 R8 will once again share the platform. The new Temerario architecture uses fewer components and has 80 percent fewer welds despite being significantly stiffer. All moves that make it easier and more affordable to build the car. It is expected to use some of the key components already developed for the Temerario – parts like the electronics system and chassis, but also likely the engine and hybrid system.

While the displacements are similar, the 4.0-liter Temerario V8 is Lamborghini-specific. It’s not the one you’ll find in Audi models, though that will probably change for the R8. The Temerario’s engine makes 789 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque, with a PHEV system and a 3.8 kWh battery pack boosting that to a total of 907 hp. A future Audi might make less power, but it should still be well north of the 612 hp of the most powerful V10 R8.

However, the report hints that the R8 could make that same 907 hp figure. Late 2027 would coincide with planned more powerful Temerario models. If the Temerario tops 1,000 hp, then it’s a safe bet the R8 won’t be far off.
Audi will have to work to distinguish the two cars. It will most likely do that the same way as it did before, focusing on everyday usability and practicality instead of focusing on styling that screams almost as loudly as the engine.

Just 99 units have been made for the entire globe, and America is getting more than 10% of them.

It’s also possible that this car will take Audi back to endurance racing. The report says that Audi is looking to develop FIA-homologated versions to compete in events like the Nürburgring 24 Hours. It could also possibly return to Le Mans via the hypercar class joining competitors like Aston Martin.
