Audi’s Latest Luxury Arrival Is A Station Wagon You Can’t Have
\
Audi, you had us in the first half. More dynamic and more efficient? That sounds like exactly what we’re looking for. But more digital? Now, you might have lost us. We can’t wait to find out, as Audi has just revealed the latest version of one of its best vehicles. The new Audi A6 Avant, the company’s secret code for « station wagon. »

« I believe it’s the perfect balance between sporty and proud and sharp and soft, » said Audi exterior designer Francesco D’Amore. The A6 Avant’s long wheelbase and long hood give it a great stance, with the long roof giving it a sense of occasion, he said, describing the design.
We describe Audi’s new sticking-out grille design as an underbite. D’Amore says that it makes the car look « very proud. » He calls the design, along with Audi’s newest singleframe grille shape and layout, confident and sleek, and showing its status.
A More Technical And More Efficient Look For The Audi Wagon
Jewel-like OLED taillights are split from the light bar that runs side to side at the rear. D’Amore says it gives the car a more technical look, and we’re in agreement that the taillights elevate the car’s design. The new shape cuts more sleekly through the air. The coefficient of drag is just 0.25, which is shockingly low for a car like this. That saves fuel, but it also promises to cut cabin noise.

America Missed Out On Audi’s Ballistic Sub-Compact SUV
You’d think a turbocharged performance SUV would be a no-brainer for the American market, but Audi doesn’t see it that way.
Audi calls the new A6 Avant’s engines « MHEV plus ». We’re familiar with mild-hybrid systems, where a starter-generator helps the car spend more time in start-stop mode and adds some torque when pulling away. Plus means a second motor mounted to the back of the transmission. It is another 48V motor, but it is strong enough to park and low-speed maneuver fully on electric power. It can even run on electric power during slow-speed city driving.
The Plus system will be attached to two engines to start, but neither is the one we’re waiting for. A 2.0-liter TDI diesel-four makes 201 horsepower and an undisclosed (but certainly high) amount of torque. The 3.0-liter V6 will make 362 hp, and probably a similarly large amount of torque.
A New Hybrid Term, But No RS6 Avant News
Missing, of course, is the RS6, the high-performance version of the Avant, and probably the only one that will come to North America. Expect it to make at least the 621 horsepower of last year’s when it finally shows up for sale.
To make it fun to drive, the A6 Avant will offer all-wheel steering and an adaptive air suspension with adjustable ride height. The car should handle more crisply, thanks to Audi stiffening everything between the steering wheel and the driving wheels.

Audi RS6 Replacement Won’t Make The Same Mistake As The BMW M5
Previous spy shots of a widebody wagon have turned out to be of the upcoming A7 allroad. THIS is the next RS7, we promise.
Then there’s the digital. The car’s new tech. The A6 Avant will offer a panoramic main display and a display for the passenger. Audi calls the cabin warm and personable, neither of which are words we’d have used to describe an Audi interior since the baseball-glove TT. Extensive customization options will include letting the driver pick from one of seven digital light signatures outside.
You’ll notice that this is short on details about things like screen sizes, actual tech features, and even driver assists. That’s because Audi isn’t talking about those parts just yet. It will have to soon, though, as the new Audi A6 Avant is set to reach customers’ hands by the end of May. Pricing in Germany starts from €58,000, roughly $61,000.
